Bizzle: Crowns and Crosses

The sixth album from pimp-turned-Christian rapper Mark “Bizzle” Felder starts off unassumingly enough, but the second half is a tour-de-force of thoughtful introspection dealing with heavy subjects like the challenges of maintaining marital closeness (“Work It Out”), the deceitfulness of the internet (“From the Outside”), and the lure of selling out (“Money Get Low”). The beats improve steadily along the way. Even Bizzle’s vocal tone takes a dramatic turn between the album’s two halves, from a nasal whine to an impassioned declarative style. Alongside similarly articulate artists like Sho Baraka and Beautiful Eulogy, Bizzle advances the case for rap music as a vital instrument for Christian discourse and personal confession.
