By Fire

Today I’m going to share with you a little of what I do to keep my mind and body in touch with what I consider to be contemporary drumming. A few of my students and I are into a band called Hiatus Kaiyote. They have been nominated for two Grammy’s and are writing music that I find extremely interesting. The drummer, Perry Moss, is exceptional and has a very cool and unique style of playing.

This transcription is from the CD Choose Your Weapon. The song is called “By Fire”. If you have not heard this band, you need to check them out. This transcription is from the top of the song to where the vocal starts. The next section is from the bridge where the vocal begins at 2:49 minutes into the song.

One of the interesting things about Perry’s drumming is that at times it is unquantifiable. That is, it cannot be written out perfectly. The Bridge section is a good example of this. What you see here is only a portion of the song.  If you want the whole transcription you can contact me.

I hope this will inspire you to broaden your musical horizons.
